Benjamin Nelson was one of the most prolific musicians of the 90’s, but it all came to a swift close when a tragic car accident ended his career leaving him socially dysfunctional and crippled by hallucinations that cause him to constantly question what is and isn’t real. His memory and influence lives on in the eyes of music, but the man all but disappears into solitude.

Our story picks up ten year down the line when a quiet and alone Ben, makes his living by selling prescription medications that he refuses to take. His life of just getting by runs out of steam and he decides to head home to California under the guise of getting a new job producing an up and coming band’s freshman record.

His presence is quite unexpected for his younger sister Samantha; a struggling actress in Los Angeles who hasn’t heard from her brother since the accident all those years ago. It also comes as a surprise to her best friend and roommate Casey; Ben’s high school sweetheart and one time fiance.

Though both have been scarred by being left behind during the height of Ben’s rise to fame, they also sympathize for the  hand life has dealt him and allow him to stay while he gets on his feet.

Ben is somewhat oblivious to the awkwardness but finds himself  getting along with both girls as they use him as a distraction not to deal with their issues with each other. He’s butts heads with Casey’s new boyfriend whom works in the music business and comes face to face with the reality of who he really used to be.

“Before the Lights Come Up” is the story of a fallen man struggling to put back together the pieces of the lives he’s shattered.
