So I guess the third time is the charm, at abouts 4 in the am this morning we started the export of the completely finished Hiding in the Open. Holy crap after over a year and a half at this we finally finished one. Oh make no mistake my friends good old Kings of Mexico and Goon are still kickin’ around and they will have their day but today….today belongs to Hiding in the Open.
And dammit I’m proud of it. As I hope you all soon find out, its actually a good movie. And it should be, this was our most intensive shoot so far. Composed mostly of night shoots (which before this project we avoided like the plague) on weeknights, which meant we had our paying jobs (non-film related unfortunately) before and after each shoot. But we held in there and knocked out principle photography in less than a month.
Than came post. If you personally knows us, and chances are if you are reading this you do, you know post on our last two films did not go exactly as planned. Matter of fact they are still going…a littler closer to plan these days but we still got awhile. So you might ask, “Why then Ronnie did you guys finish Hiding in the Open so fast?” Well my little internet friend let me first tell you I’m touched that you know my name. But we had two main advantages going for us this time. First, we were way way WAY more organized than we had ever been. Every file had a name, we had shot lists, every shot had an audio description before it. We dumped footage and audio on to the same drive on every single shoot. My technical blog will come later as I’m sure so will Paul’s but I cannot understate how much this stepped up our game, especially in post. The second factor was, because we had such a intensive schedule there was a clear vision of the project as a whole the entire time. On other shoots we would have location or scheduling conflicts and we shot on weekends making it that sometimes there was weeks between shoots. So you may get 2 good shoots worth of footage but they don’t flow as nicely as you would like, and that catches up to you in post. Not the case with Hiding. I will say this is by far our most realized film, in that it is exactly what we started it off to be. To this you might say “Well Ronnie, technically this is your guys’ only finished film so it would have to be the most realized” and to that I would answer shut your damn pie hole or you not my friend anymore, even if you do know my name.
So now that we have it finished herein lies the big question…Now what? Well rest assured this film will become viewable and soon. How? Were not sure yet but we got some stuff and were workin’ on it. But let the record show this WILL happen soon. In all seriousness this project like anything we ever do is a labor of love. We love these films. Believe me there is NO WAY now that one is finished that we are going to sit on it or let it wait.
Take care friends.
your local friendly soundman, Ronnie
